Giving up Sugar for Lent

No, I’m not catholic, but I like the amount of time, and the limit of lent.

Day one: 8AM So far so good.

I chose sugar this year to run a simple test. It has been connected to inflammation. I have achy joints, and a knee still un-swelling for a Arthroscopic repair.

I also like many people would love to get rid of some extra pounds.  Giving up sugar can’t hurt that venture at all.  *:)

And it’s time to stop giving in to my “sweet tooth”.

So simple sugar in all it’s glory… candy, cookies, cakes, doughnuts, and I’m sure I will encounter other types do deny my self with.

Food Journal Week 2 or Why the scale is not the answer to everything.

It has been a week of numbers swinging. I have been up as much as 2 pounds, and down just below lasts Mondays 145.

Here’s the break down: I weigh first thing in the morning.

Monday: Kettle corn fest!

Tuesday: Up: Cheese and Chocolate fondue for dinner with Andrea and my Niece JD.

Wednesday: UP: Normal daily regular food & water.

Thursday: Down: Normal daily regular food & water.

Friday: Down: Normal daily regular food & water for breakfast and lunch.

Then Andrea came over. She had a bout of food poisoning. It kicked in just after she arrived. The release of the bug triggered a drop in her blood pressure. Enough that she passed out. (she’s fine) In the time between her fainting in my loo, (very scarey) and her resting peacefully on my couch, I managed to eat a lot of junk due to stress.

Saturday:Up: My niece’s graduation and celebration. Super fudgie chocolate cake, my favorite Caesar salad, Champagne!

Just before the walk!

Sunday:Up: Normal daily regular food & water.

Monday: Did not budge: WTF!? Salty Worcestershire Sauce?

So it’s Monday and the number is higher than last Monday and I am slightly freaked by the scale number. But I remember the tracker has you track measurements too, so I measure… Down 3.5 inches! One inch off waist, hips and thighs, ½ inch of upper arm.

I have done my hooping, and when I hoop while watching TV I hold 3lb weights and move my arms about. I used my pull-up bar daily. (still only ½ of a pull-up) I even got a little bike ride in on Friday. So though my “weight” is up, I am smaller. I am converting. I have less fat and more muscle. Yay!

This is a good lesson for me. I am somewhat of a compulsive weigh-er. I am down to (mostly) once a day. I see I need to consider all the information available and not rely on one factor

But I am truly hopping good clean eating today will lead to a nice drop tomorrow. *:)

Early Food Log Update

I feel like I’ve found my grove again.  I hooped a lot today. Friday seem to be a good day to be active. And I hooped everyday for a 30 minute minimum all week.

As for the food log. I went into total rebellion Wednesday. I ate 2698 in calories. Three moderate meals and over 1000 in snacking. Dingdong.  Hello.  This is not what I intend.  I got back on track Thursday.  Even with buttered bread at lunch I only ate 2019 calories.

The tracker takes the calories burned off the total. I’m not looking at that number so am just posting the intake number.  At least I’m not looking at it now.

It’s fun counting the calories without actually doing the counting. I’m staying under my carb total with ease. The scale has not moved yet. But I know things are shifting.  I’m glad I did the body measurements portion on the Everyday Health site.

When I am active I often get smaller before I get lighter. *:)

Food Log Confessions

I started a food log about 3 or 4 months into joining Bitch Yourself Thin.  I had been losing about a half pounds a week, and it was starting to add up.  I started the log to track what was working.

My Food & Weight Log

I was dropping about 1/2 a pounds a week, and that got me down 20 pounds by November.  And I held the line through January.  On January 8th I began hooping 30 minutes a day.  With hooping I have toned up a good bit.  But I’m still there swaying between 144 and 148.  I am a lot more fit, I freely admit it.  But it’s been 5 months and I’m feeling stuck.

And then I watched Fat Head with my hubby.  And it was funny and had some good info and incites.  But I love this guy totally “excelled” food log.

So yesterday I singed in on Everyday Health for their free food log/journal.

Everyday Health Food & Active Journal

Brief Review: It’s easy to use. You put in you height weight and gole weight and if give you numbers to work within. You can created your own food in the food lists, using the Nutrition Facts found on packing. It has little glasses icons to click for your water intake. And it tracks activity, but you can’t add to that, and they don’t have hooping. (I figured brisk walk would work.)

So on Day 1 I came in under my 2000 calorie total, and way over on my sugar. Milk has a lot of sugar. And I’m down .8 tenths of a pound. For Day 2, after diner, I am under my well 2000, and not to far over on my sugar. (It’s the milk I swear.) But I’m going to have a slice of Carrot Zucchini Bread, toasted with butter. I’ll still be within the “limit”.

I had probably let my portions get a little big. I had stopped drinking enough water. And my snacking had become sweet carbs. This is what I am seeing so far. So I will give it a week and let you know what happens. *:)

My Bowl

My Bowl & Standered Bowl

I started truly looking into my eating habits in March 2010. With the help of my fellow bitches (www.bitchyourselfthin.com) I saw that I like to sample while I cook, among other things. Looking and looking I came to some old information.

1) Our stomach are the size of our fists.  2 the amount of food to reasonable put into this is the amount your cupped hands make.

I had already reduced the amount I was eating by Savoring my food. Taking the time to feel the texture as I enjoyed the taste. I had also started using smaller plates so the amount I was eating did not look pathetic. After all I am in America where a single size serving for a steak is 12oz, and my size is around 2oz.

The thing is I eat a lot of rice and pasta dishes. I now also eat a lot of grain based dishes, and I don’t want to chase this around the plate, so I use bowls. Well have you looked at the size of bowls these days?

The average “soup” bowl is 2 cups of food. And tho my hand are not small I looking a 1 ½ cups. So I went on a bowl hunt. This sounds more interesting that it was. At my local farmers market there is often vendors as well.  And often pottery vendors. So I started holding bowls between my hand looking for a good fit. And I found one. And only one so far.

Well I found another but it was pricey. I walked away figuring if it was there at the end of the day I was meant to have it. It was not.

So here I am with my one bowl and guess what? No, I did not break it. But for some reason my hubby has bonded with it. As ofter as not he has used it and it’s in the sink. Sure its a cute bowl and a lovely hand warming size, but I’m really surprised how often he goes for it. So… I am still keeping my eye peeled for slimier bowls so we can have more than one in the house. *:)

No Chocolate: Day 2, 3, & 4

Thursday. Down .2 pounds.

I’m out in the real world today being a hair Dresser. The only possible issue is Rudy’s Doughnuts, literally 4 doors down. The chocolate old fashioned calls to me during any pause in my work. There are other options, plain old fashioned, cake crumb…

I am going to not have a doughnut today. I do not want to just transfer the calories I ate as chocolate into calories I eat as simple carbs. So I am bringing fruit snacks and lunch.

Success, no doughnut or superfluous carbs.

Friday. Down .2 pounds.

Friday fun day. I teach yoga, then hoop class, then yoga again. I’m bringing extra smoothie (orange banana & yogurt) with me as a snack. I’ll have french toast for lunch. I often have french toast for lunch, so not superfluous.

Later this day: I had a slice of coffee cake with Andrea before we hooped.

Jeff and I had Minestrone soup for dinner.

Now this is starting to look like a food log. And in fact I have not been craving chocolate. So I already see that it is a monkey mind habit and not a physical addition. Well it is only 3 days.

Saturday down .4 pounds

Obviously chocolate every day is one of the thing that keep me from my goal weight. I had quite a lot of salami and cheese yesterday and I am still down in weight. Lesson to me; The sugar and fat combo is not a healthy one. Duh!

I have been slowly loosing weight, but top out at ½ a pound a week. Doing the math I could hit 1 pound down this week. So it look like chocolate will become a weekly treat, because a daily treat that just pads me is not needed in my life.

This years first poppy

Giving Up Chocolate For Lent

My good friend AS has suggested give up something for lent. She was raised Catholic, but is not a practitioner. Since we both have daily habits that are not the most healthy we are giving it a go.

For me it’s chocolate/candy. I don’t eat much candy that is not covered or covering chocolate, but I don’t want to just swap out chocolate for some other sugar treat. I have always had a “sweet tooth”, and if my consumption is not every day it’s 6 out of 7. I’m in the middle of a Thin Mints fest right now. So…

I already have gone through some anxiety about this venture. I do know rationally that I can say “screw it” and eat all the chocolate I want, since I know falling off this wagon wont send me to hell. But this is about seeing that I can stop eating chocolate. That I can. That I have control, not my brain. Not the voice in my head that makes suggestions all day long. And the anxiety is kinda funny since I have in the bast given up more challenging substances, like tobacco for one. Still, there is the rebellious teenager inside me that can rear her ugly head when I least expect it. Plus that voice that always suggesting.

My game plan includes:

Teeth brushing, a strategy I used when I quit smoking. It will keep my hands busy for a minute. And I like to keep that fresh brushed feeling.

Water, warm water actually. I find the warm comforting and the water will keep my stomach content.

Activity. In my car it will be belting out what ever song is on the radio. At work I will march in place. Elsewhere I will hoop or march in place. (This my help me drop a pound or two too.)

The active portion is so I don’t let me think “If I had some chocolate I would have more energy from the caffeine.”

So from March 9th till April 17th I will use these tools. So I can see that though I love chocolate, I can live without it.

Tissue play - nothing to do with chocolate *:)
